The Opportunity

Rapidly evolving technological advancements are transforming jobs faster than ever, making STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) skills crucial. However, students of color often lack access to advanced STEM courses, hindering their opportunities in these fields. Recognizing this need, Calculus Roundtable, a Bay Area nonprofit focused on advancing K-12 STEM education for students of color, created the Diversity in STEM Fellows program — a program that trains college STEM majors to tutor young learners in math and science and provide holistic mentorship, promoting equity in STEM education.

Proven Results

The Impact

The unique partnership with InsideTrack is already showing positive results for Calculus Roundtable, its Fellows, and most importantly, the young STEM mentees. So far, 21 Fellows and staff have received specialized training, equipping them to facilitate empowering conversations and support students in making well-informed decisions about their futures. This training is rooted in a trauma-informed, healing-centered approach, creating a safe and supportive environment where students feel heard and valued. And ongoing developmental feedback helps them continue to hone their coaching skills, while nurturing a sense of belonging and confidence with their students.

In the following video, Armondo Lopez, a Diversity in STEM Fellow with Calculus Roundtable, discusses what drew him to the STEM mentorship role, why building trust is crucial with young people, and how InsideTrack’s CLEAR framework helped open the door to meaningful conversations where students in marginalized communities felt heard and validated.

Through our partnership with InsideTrack, we are not only enhancing the skills of our Fellows but also creating a ripple effect that reaches the young students we mentor. This collaboration is a strong step forward in helping us close the educational gap for students of color in STEM fields.

Jim Hollis

Executive Director and Founder, Calculus Roundtable

Often the first step is building that rapport and making students feel they can let down their walls and take part in learning. Using the CLEAR framework and communicating in a way that validates everything that they're feeling is so important. Having that structured frame for interacting with students made it so we could really teach them things that might spark interest in STEM and give them a leg up for when they go into the real world and consider different avenues for life.
